ACOI is delighted to join the GEMS Alliance. GEMS is an independent alliance of organizations advocating for equity for all women in academic medicine and science, which will drive healthcare equity for all. This alliance of organizations focuses on four gaps known to impede attainment of gender equity in academic medicine and science:
- GAP 1 – Inadequate numbers of historically excluded women admitted to medical school.
- GAP 2 – The gender imbalance in medical specialties and scientific disciplines.
- GAP 3 – Inadequate numbers of women ascending to significant leadership roles where the policies, resources (including salary), and strategic directions are set and barriers to equity are overcome.
- GAP 4 – Lack of flexible, targeted, and accessible support for women who bear children and/or bear the additional burden of caregiving during their careers, beginning with students, post-graduate trainees, and extending through faculty.
Other member organizations include the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, the American College of Physicians, Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and more.
ACOI will participate in the quarterly All Members Meetings along with one of the founding individual members, Karen J. Nichols, DO, MACOI. ACOI looks forward to working with the GEMS Alliance to address gender equity issues.
