October 11, 2024

ACOI recognizes osteopathic medical students who are outstanding members of their medical schools and communities with the Student of the Month Recognition Program.

Please join us in congratulating the October winner: Alyssa Zakala, OMS IV, Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Student Doctor Zakala was nominated for her overall dedication to academics, clinical responsibilities, and contributions to the community. She is described as an incredibly hard worker and a brillant medical student. One of her nominators said that she will "continue to make significant contributions to the field of osteopathic medicine and to the lives of her patients." Alyssa inspires others to be the best version of themselves, understands the importance of collaboration in medicine, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to her classmates.

What truly sets Alyssa apart though is her compassion for her patients. She understands that medicine is not just about diagnosing and treating illnesses, but also about caring for the whole person. Alyssa takes the time to listen to her patients, understand their concerns, and address their needs in a holistic and empathetic manner. Her patients consistently express gratitude for the kindness and respect she shows them, and it is clear that Alyssa views each patient as an individual deserving of personalized care. Her commitment to patient-centered care is a testament to her character and the type of physician she will become.

Meet Alyssa Zakala

What is your hometown?
West Palm Beach, FL

What is your education?
Bachelors Degree at the University of Florida and pursuing my DO degree at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What are your hobbies?
Staying active is important to me. I enjoy hiking, going to pilates and pure barre classes, as well as doing restorative yoga. I spend my free time exploring locally owned bookstores and always pick up a coffee and a new book. Sharing meals with loved ones is my love language, and I like to either cook for others or try new restaurants with friends.

What are three things people may not know about you?

  1.  I am Ukrainian and Filipino.
  2.  As a kid, I once entered a bookmark art contest at my local library and won second place! I got to meet the mayor and received a free R.L. Stine book.
  3.  I hiked Manoa Falls in Oahu after a rainstorm (not a great idea) and had to use literal jungle vines to help me climb through mud.

How has ACOI helped you in your education so far?
ACOI is a great resource for students who are pursuing Internal Medicine. ACOI is organized and has opportunities to present research, attend conferences and seminars, and get involved with regional leadership. Our internal medicine chapter at ACOM has personally allowed me to take on a leadership role by acting as chair for our cardiology sub-committee. ACOI also helps me stay up to date with the latest trends in medicine.

Do you have an idea of what specialty you would like to go into?
I will be applying into Internal Medicine, however the ultimate goal is to pursue a career in cardiology. I have strong interests in heart failure and atherosclerosis.

Stay True to Why You Pursued Medicine.
