Charge of the ACOI Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine

1. Objectives
The purposes of the Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine are:

  1. To determine whether the College appropriately addresses issues related to physicians and students who are racially and ethnically underrepresented in Osteopathic Medicine relative to their numbers in the general population of the United States. 
  2. To support the College to address issues related to health outcomes and physician workforce disparities, the impact of cultural differences on health care delivery and outcomes. 
  3. To ensure that the College has policies, advocacy, and resources available to assist in addressing professional challenges that are unique to its’ members and students who are racially and ethnically underrepresented in Osteopathic Medicine. 
  4. To help the College increase leadership and general participation opportunities for physicians and students who are racially and ethnically underrepresented in Osteopathic Medicine.
     

2. Membership and Terms of Service
The Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine shall consist of the following members:

  1. A chair, appointed by the President. The chair may or may not be a member of the Board of Directors;
  2. Up to nine members selected from the Active membership of the College;
  3. At least one internal medicine resident or subspecialty fellow.

3. Accountability
The Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine reports to the Board of Directors at its semiannual meetings. Regular reports shall be presented by the chair to the Executive Committee. The Committee shall meet regularly by telephone conference.

 

4. Responsible Staff Person
The Executive Director shall designate appropriate staff to assist the Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine in its work throughout the year.

 

5. Self-Evaluation Plan
The members of the Committee on Ethnically and Racially Underrepresented Populations in Medicine shall conduct a written self-study evaluation of the Committee’s performance on an annual basis. This evaluation shall include:

  1. effectiveness
  2. reliability
  3. participation
  4. creativity
  5. communication
  6. resource provision

The same areas will be assessed by the ACOI staff person assigned to this Committee. The Committee shall discuss openly its strengths and weaknesses for purposes of continuous improvement.
