November 21, 2024

ACOI recognizes osteopathic medical students who are outstanding members of their medical schools and communities with the Student of the Month Recognition Program.

Please join us in congratulating the December winner: Aila Cordero, OMS-II, NSU Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine - Fort Lauderdale.

Student Doctor Cordero was nominated for her leadership skills and community involvement. Aila is President of the Hispanic Osteopathic Medical Student Association (HOMSA) and uses her role in HOMSA to spread awareness of osteopathic medicine throughout the South Florida community, especially amongst the Cuban community. She has worked tirelessly to educate classmates about Hispanic culture, tutor in medical Spanish, and help bridge the gap between the medical community and largely underserved communities in the area. She also helps classmates' network with Hispanic leaders in osteopathic medicine by inviting a variety of physicians to come speak with our student body.

In addition to her role in HOMSA, Aila is the Chapter Advocacy Officer for the American Medical Student Association and an active member of the Internal Medicine club SOIMA.

Aila is described as kind, empathetic, and an amazing leader on the campus.

Meet Aila Cordero

What is your hometown?
Miami, FL

What is your education?
I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from the Florida International University Honors College. I am currently pursing my DO degree at Nova Southeastern University Kiran. C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What are your hobbies?
In my free time, I love to do arts and crafts, watch Grey’s Anatomy and Gilmore Girls, and learn how to cook new recipes. I also love helping my mom with her Cuban food and desserts business.

What are three things people may not know about you?

  1.  I was born in Miami, FL but my parents are originally from San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba.
  2.  I went on a dream vacation with my family to Hawaii and hiked the Diamond Head Volcano.
  3.  Throughout my childhood and adolescence, I loved taking dance classes and performing in shows.

How has ACOI helped you in your education so far?
ACOI has played an instrumental part in my success in pre-clinical years. During my first semester of medical school, I attended a SOIMA club event where Dr. Hasty was a guest speaker. I learned so much about what we should be doing on rotations and what traits and experiences make us competitive applicants for residency. This was pivotal to my education and knowledge about what’s to come in the next few years. ACOI is truly a fantastic resource for all medical students!

Do you have an idea of what specialty you would like to go into?
I really like Internal Medicine with a future fellowship in Gastroenterology, but I am keeping an open mind as I will be starting rotations next year!
