ACOI Recognizes Paul W. Davis, DO, with Inaugural Malcoun Memorial Award

The American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI), a national professional organization representing osteopathic Internal Medicine physicians and subspecialists, recognized Paul W. Davis, DO, as the 2024 recipient of the Anthony J. Malcoun Memorial Award. The award will be presented at ACOI 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Newly established in 2024, this award honors the legacy of Anthony J. Malcoun, DO, MACOI, who demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching in the field of Nephrology. Dr. Malcoun was known for outstanding compassion in his delivery of care and his respectful approach with his patients, their families, and his healthcare colleagues.
Recipients of this award are Nephrology fellows who demonstrate and excel in the following:
- Sense of compassion and care for others;
- Cultural sensitivity;
- Welcoming opportunities for teaching and one-on-one mentorships;
- Leading by example in professional and ethical behavior;
- Concern for the community and engagement in volunteer activities; and
- Superior knowledge and intellectual curiosity.
Paul W. Davis, DO, is a Nephrology and Hypertension fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition, Dr. Davis is an Instructor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He graduated from the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Davis has a unique background, having served as a chemical engineer for six years before starting his path in osteopathic internal medicine. His engineering experiences took him across the U.S. and the Middle East and drove his interest in serving his community and connecting with people across diverse backgrounds.
As one of his recommenders, Wisit Cheungpasitporn, MD, FACP, FASN, FAST, stated:
“Dr. Davis has shown an unwavering concern for community welfare and a strong dedication to volunteer activities. From developing grey water reuse systems in the Middle East to serving as a conversation partner for hospice patients and volunteering at free clinics, he has consistently sought out opportunities to make a positive impact. This commitment to community service aligns perfectly with the values championed by Dr. Malcoun. […] His cultural sensitivity, dedication to teaching and mentorship, exemplary professional behavior, commitment to community service, and intellectual curiosity make him an ideal recipient.”
In his personal statement, Dr. Davis expressed appreciation for the opportunity his work in nephrology provides to teach students and patients. He is passionate about challenging himself and others to think critically about health, and his long-term interests and goals include addressing disparities in treatment options while improving patients’ quality of life.
