As March is National Women’s History Month and on February 3rd we celebrated National Women Physicians Day, I thought I would investigate a bit about women in medicine. I found some of the statistics fascinating and hope you enjoy reading!

As is evident in California, recent years have seen wildfires pose increased threats to health. Climate change has been linked to multiple conditions that favor more fire, including earlier and lessened snow melt, changing precipitation patterns, altered wind patterns, insect infestation, and increasing vapor pressure deficit. Wildfire risk is projected to continue to increase. By the middle of the century, the number of days of exposure to very high or high wildfire risk is expected to increase by 11%. The absence of government commitment and health system mobilization does not keep these wildfires from occurring. Therefore, our preparation will be key.
Half a decade ago we stood on the precipice of a pandemic that would change the world as we knew it. Where we once took the daily practices of medicine and healthcare for granted, we found ourselves faced with an ominous unknown. What the future held was never guaranteed, but now we faced an illness that baffled even the experts. Our daily lives were interrupted with a new challenge to what we were to do to curb this outbreak. Between the expedited search for a vaccination along with social distancing we pushed our society into doubt, isolation, and fear.

And yet these hardworking organs enable so many essential metabolic regulations; Carol Kirila, DO, MACOI, deems them “just plain fascinating.” And she firmly believes everyone should pay as much attention to their kidney function as they do other processes when they visit their doctor or have lab work completed.
